California revokes 17,000 commercial driver's licenses from immigrants

California authorities will revoke 17,000 commercial driver's licenses (CDL) issued to immigrants. The reason was that the validity of these licenses exceeded the period of legal stay of drivers in the United States.
The decision was made amid criticism from the Trump administration, which accused California and other states of granting commercial rights to immigrants without legal status.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy viewed California's actions as an admission of mistakes and threatened the state with $160 million in fines if the licenses were not revoked.
The office of Governor Gavin Newsom explained that all drivers had work permits, despite the fact that licenses were issued for a period exceeding their legal status.
Earlier, in September, Sean Duffy tightened the rules for issuing commercial licenses. Now only holders of H-2A, H-2B and E-2 visas will be able to receive them.
According to estimates by the US Department of Transportation, of the 200,000 immigrants who have such licenses, only about 10,000 will be able to renew them.
