Maryland tightens rules on the use of speed cameras and increases fines
09 июня 2025

The new rules for the use of speed cameras, approved by Governor Wes Moore, will come into force in Maryland On October 1st of 2025. The law provides for a significant change in the system of fines for speed violations recorded by automatic cameras.
The amount of the fine will now depend on the degree of speeding: from $ 40 for exceeding 12-15 mph to $ 425 for exceeding more than 40 mph. Previously, the maximum fine was fixed at $40.
According to Delegate Vaughn Stewart, representing Montgomery County, the previous fixed fine did not provide a sufficient deterrent effect. As an example, he cited the situation on highway 210, where from August to October 2023, 204 cases of exceeding the speed limit by more than 100 mph were recorded, including one case when the driver was traveling at 170 mph.
The funds received from fines are planned to be used to improve the condition of roads and increase road safety. However, according to critics, the main purpose of installing cameras is not so much to ensure security as to increase budget revenues. They note that Baltimore is still one of the three cities with the highest death rate as a result of road accidents.
