Senators have introduced a bill to tighten the issuance of commercial driver's licenses (CDL)

The bill entitled "On the safe licensing of commercial drivers 2025", initiated by a group of senators, involves stricter requirements for the procedure for obtaining a commercial driver's license (CDL). In addition, the document provides for liability measures for states that deviate from federal standards.
This legislative initiative was presented in the Senate on October 16, and a day later in the House of Representatives. The reason for the development of the document was the tragic accident that occurred in August on the Florida Turnpike.
According to the main provisions of the draft law, all exams related to obtaining a CDL must be conducted exclusively in English. Applicants for a commercial license must have a valid standard driver's license for at least a year. The Secretary of Transportation will have the right to suspend or deprive states of the authority to issue CDLs in case of non-compliance with federal standards.
Lawmakers, including Congressman Andy Barr and Senators Tom Cotton and Tommy Tuberville, say that the proposed measures are necessary to improve road safety.
